The ruling on working in mixed gender places – Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hadi al-wadi’i رحمه الله

The ruling on working in mixed gender places

By Shaykh Muqbil ibn hadi al wadi’i Rahimahullah

From his tape entitled: the geologic questions from the Yemeni university

Q: Is it permissible for a man to work to work with his female colleague knowing that they say: “she is considered as your sister” and is it permissible to shake hands with her? and what is your advice to the male and female university students?

A: It is permissible according to the opinion of Yusuf al Qaradawi! but [according] to the shar’ (i.e islamic law); The Messenger of Allah May Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety said:

(A man is not alone with a woman but the third of them is Ash-Shaitan) [1]

And Allah – Exalted and the Most High –  says in his noble Book:

{Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.)}

And (Allah) says – Exalted and the Most High – :

{(And tell the believing women to lower their gaze {from looking at forbidden things}

And the prophet (May Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety) said:

(Allah has written the very portion of Zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) which [every] son of adam will indulge in. There will be no escape from it. The Zina of the eye is the (lustful) look) [2]

Masha’Allah a young man with a young woman, and they close the door, what do we expect -my brothers- after this? their minds are flying away, not [focused] on reviewing [their lessons] nor such and such.

Also the prophet May Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety said:

(I have not left after me, a trial more harmful to men than the [trial of] women)[3]

And she – the poor and [emotionally] weak [young woman] – is defective in respect of reason and religion, [so] there’s nothing that prevents her from falling into Fitnah with this person who is her colleague.

And it has happened in the universities in Yemen and in [countries] other than Yemen, [things] that are shameful, we honour our good and blessed  assembly -with the will of Allah- from mentioning them, and they [these things]  are even known to the majority of people.

What I advise you -o [male] student- and advise you -o [female] student- [is] not to attend mixed-gender schools, because it is considered as Fitnah, And the safety of the heart [from Fitnah] is invaluable.

Those responsible are able to make the mornings for men and afternoons – after Asr- for women, If they [those responsible] were willing to. [like that] men will be tough by men , and women by women, but the issue -my brothers- is an issue lacking order.
